New kraft corrugated box and flexographic printing offer a more environmentally friendly option
Johannesburg, South Africa – [November 2025] – Openview, South Africa’s first free-to-air satellite TV platform, has introduced new, more sustainable decoder packaging that is friendlier on the environment. The new box design begins appearing on retail shelves nationwide this month, with a progressive transition as existing inventory cycles out. During this period, both the previous and new packaging will be in circulation.
The updated packaging uses natural kraft corrugated board with recycled content and flexographic printing. According to Openview’s packaging partners, flexographic processes generally use less ink, fewer production steps and less energy than more complex print methods. The move also follows a global trend toward using simpler, more sustainable materials and packaging to help minimise environmental impact.
“With more than 3.7 million activated households and growing, we recognise that even small changes can add up over time,” said Openview Spokesperson. “This new box is a modest but important step in how we think about our packaging and our role in using friendlier materials, while still delivering the quality and value our customers expect.”
The outer decoder box remains fully recyclable through South Africa’s paper and cardboard recycling streams, supporting national waste reduction and circular economy efforts where facilities and programmes exist. By using kraft board with recycled content and water-based inks for the box, the new packaging is designed to reduce the resources required in production and make it easier to return material to the recycling loop.
How Customers Can Help
Openview encourages customers to keep the box for the 1-year warranty period, and then recycle it by flattening it and removing any non-paper components before placing it in the appropriate recycling stream.
